How to set up your SMART Board and projector
Answer:
First check to see that you have your cables and a computer to connect the Board and projector. Any PC computer with Windows 98 or higher or a MACOS X will work. SMART NotebookTM software also works with Linux. Also check to see if it has the SMART Notebook software on it. Here are some icons to look for:
Cables needed:
VGA Cable (goes to projector)
Power Cable (powers projector)
USB Cable (for SMARTBoard)
Where do the cables go?
Step 1:Make sure the power cable is running from the projector to an outlet.
Step 2:
Plug the VGA cable into the projector (it will most likely be a blue outlet that says 'computer in'), and then plug the other end into the back of the computer that is also blue and says 'computer out'.
Step 3: Take the USB cable and plug the small end in to the cable on the bottom right hand side of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Then plug the other long flat end into the computer.
Small End
Flat End
Now you will want to start to turn things on.
- First turn on your projector, you should begin to see a blue light.
- Next you can turn on your computer.
- Once the computer begins to start you will see the lights on the pen tray of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard light up.
- The light on the right hand side of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard will start out red, but will turn green when it is ready.
Now check to see that the Notebook software is installed on the computer you are using.
Look for this icon in the bottom right corner of the Windows Navigation Bar or the docking station on a MAC.
Look for this icon on the Desktop.
If you do not see these icons, installing the software is easy. You can click on the link below and choose which download works for your system or install the software that came on a CD with the computer.www2.smarttech.com
Now it is time to center the projector
If the projector is ceiling mounted you can skip this next step. The projector will need to be lined up with the SMART Board interactive whiteboard to make the most centered image on the Board as possible. Once the projector is centered, try to align the image with the SMART Board interactive whiteboard by adjusting the Board and the legs on the projector. If you are using a laptop and are only seeing a blue light, press the "fn" button And either "F8" or "F4" to get the image to project on the Board. One last step and you should be ready to go
Orienting/Aligning the Board: On your pen tray look for 2 buttons, 1 is the Keyboard Button the other is the Right Mouse Click Button located beside each other. Older Pen trays have 2 buttons on the right:
Newer models have the larger buttons located in the middle in front of the eraser:
You will need to hold down both keys at the same time. This will launch a screen that looks like this:
You will now orient/ align the board. Press with a pen from the pen tray or your finger on the center of the diamond. Once you move your finger or pen off you will see that it has moved to the next spot to press. Press on all diamonds until screen is refreshed.

Technician Team Checklist
What you should try before you call your Technician:
- Check to see if your system is on. (Seriously, you would be surprised how many times things can be turned off and you didn’t see it happen.)
- Is the power cord connected firmly at both ends? (Again, you would be surprised how many cords are loose.)
- Is the video/ audio cable connected firmly at both ends?
- Are all your inputs/ outputs in the correct location?
- Are you getting a signal?
- Are your devices on the right source input? For example, check your remote and see if the one of these: Computer 1, Computer 2, A.V., or S-video is lit up?
- Are there any flashing indicator lights? Are they labeled? What do they say?
- Is the volume up?
- If it is a laptop attached to a projector did you hold down the function key and hit “F4” or “F8”?
- Is the proper resolution applied?
- Is the aspect ratio correct?
- Is your master power switch on?
How do I know what equipment I need?
Comparison Charts
When laying out the design of your conference, meeting or training room you come across the task of deciding what is the best equipment for your space that will be the most useful to your staff. Here is some information to help you compare the differences between some common items used in room design.
Projection Screen vs. Interactive Whiteboard:
Pull-down or drop down Screens-
- great for large venue rooms
- some can be recessed in a wall
Interactive Whiteboards
- great for writing presentation notes and instantly saving them
Projectors
There are two types of projectors most people choose. These two projectors are the DLP (Digital Light Processor) and the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) projectors and both have many strengths. The DLP Projector is known for gets longevity, overall packaging size, high-contrast image and its ability to show great video with reduced pixilation. The LCD strengths are its clarity and brightness, color saturation, sharp image, light and energy efficiency. Below we have a comparison chart that shows the features the LCD projectors have that are carried by NEC and EIKI.

How to Measure Throw:
What size image do you need? How bright does the projector need to be to retain its quality and still present a clear image. Where is the projector being positioned? Once you have decided on a projector you can then begin to determine where it will need to be installed. The throw will provide you with the information you need to determine where that projector will be placed.
Throw is the measurement used to determine how faraway a projector should be placed to present the best quality image. It is measured in Height and Length of the room. Different projector models require different distances based on what they are projecting on. Most manufacturers will give you a throw chart for a projector. Eiki offers a calculator that can be found on their website. (Choose the projector you are interested in then choose “Lens calculator” from the top menu options.)
Short throws are used to describe small spaces and close-up range. Sometimes it is used to describe a high end projector with a specific lens for a desired throw.
Large throw is used when a throw is beyond the standard throw such as for a smaller screen with a long distance.
